Garage Sale, Freecycle or Donate

I've been thinking about going through the entire house and getting rid of stuff we don't need or want anymore. I'm not sure I have enough for a garage sale, have too much to post all of it on Freecycle and not sure I just want to donate it. A garage sale would be good for the boys because I think it will be very hard for them to just "give away" their stuff. I've never had a garage sale. Is it more trouble than it's worth?

We've had two garage sales, one in Tampa one in Rockledge. I'm not a big fan, but it's interesting and I think everyone should do it once. Seems like some people come just to talk, which I find irritating, but that's my social dysfunction.

In Tampa we made around $400. The second day we tried to give things away. It's amazing...you wouldn't believe the people that wouldn't take free stuff.

I think it's fun for kids to see the way "stuff" can be new to someone else. Also, it's a great opportunity for them to run a lemonade stand.

OK, thinking back to Tampa, the garage sale was actually fun. We hung out with our neighbors and the kids had a great time, but the set up was lots of work. There's some great advice on the internet about pricing and setting up. One of my favorte tips is the one price thing. We did all clothing articles $1...so we had some old tshirts and nice suits at the same price. We sold a ton of clothes.

Also, don't forget about Craigslist.

If you have a lot of stuff to sell, it's a good idea. Make sure it doesn't conflict with some other big event going on in the area too (like a neighborhood yardsale--that's happened to us twice!!!).
What about kid consignment sales--those are big here in Mont.

You should totally do it. They're huge work but I always find them to be a big blessing! It helps clean out the house, provides us with funds (which are ALWAYS NEEDED) and provides other families with the opportunity to find good things at a low price (which is often a blessing to others who are strapped for money.)

I say GO FOR IT!

I think having a garage sale is good if you have great kids things to sell. I find that those attract the most people. It's also important to advertise in your local paper and put the best things you've got in that ad. Good luck!

Thanks! Our neighborhood has a big garage sale every April so I'll hold onto our stuff until then.
